Observation schedule and interval-sheet generator

Generate a numbered interval sheet with method-specific recording rules, missed intervals, coverage and an observed-interval fraction.

How to use this tool

Use this interval recording sheet generator to practice whole-interval, partial-interval or momentary recording with an explicit schedule.

  • Choose the interval method and enter the observation window and interval length in seconds.
  • Review the generated interval boundaries and use a single consistent observation rule.
  • Export the blank sheet or record occurrence, nonoccurrence or missed intervals before printing. A blank result is unrecorded.

Fictional example and how to read the result

A 10-minute window with 30-second intervals creates 20 intervals. Whole-interval and partial-interval observations answer different questions.

Interval percentages summarize the selected observation rule. They should not be presented as an exact event count or exact duration.

State the sampling rule before recording

Partial interval: mark occurrence if the defined target appears at any point in the interval. Whole interval: mark occurrence only if it is present throughout the entire interval. Momentary sampling: mark whether it is present at the listed endpoint.

The observed-interval fraction is occurrence ÷ (occurrence + nonoccurrence). Coverage is (occurrence + nonoccurrence) ÷ planned intervals. Missed and blank intervals are shown separately.

Interval percentage is not percentage of time. Different methods have different sampling properties; a shorter final interval also changes the sampling window and is labelled explicitly.

This is a printable schedule and entered-data utility. It has no live timer, so browser background timing and interruptions cannot silently manufacture observations.

  • Define one target and one method per sheet.
  • Enter a positive observation window and interval length.
  • Choose whether to include or omit the final shorter interval; omitted seconds are reported.
  • Record missed intervals explicitly; blank generated rows remain available for printing.

What to enter in each field

  • Observable target definition: Define one visible or audible target, such as the agreed activity being underway. Use the same definition for the full sheet.
  • Anonymous observer label: Use an anonymous observer label such as observer A. Names and client identifiers are unnecessary.
  • Sampling method: Partial: occurrence at any point in the interval. Whole: occurrence throughout the full interval. Momentary: occurrence at the listed endpoint. Keep one rule per sheet.
  • Planned window (seconds): Enter the positive total planned observation duration in seconds; 300 means five minutes. It sets the generated interval schedule, not a live timer.
  • Interval length (seconds): Enter the positive interval length in seconds; 60 means one minute. The schedule can contain at most 1,000 intervals.
  • Include final shorter interval: Choose yes to retain a labelled shorter final interval or no to omit leftover seconds. Each retained interval has equal weight in the fraction.
  • Planned observation context / schedule: Describe where and when the planned observation will happen and any agreed conditions. Interruptions should be recorded as missed.
  • Interval number: Enter the generated interval number, starting at 1, once per row. Match the number to the start/end window in the results sheet.
  • Recorded result: Occurrence/nonoccurrence use the selected sampling rule. Choose missed when observation was interrupted; leave blank for an interval not yet recorded. Missed and blank do not count as nonoccurrence.
  • Anonymous context / interruption note: Optional: explain a missed interval or context change anonymously. The fraction describes sampled intervals, not percentage of elapsed time.
