Discrete trial and prompt-level calculator
Calculate independent, prompted and incorrect trial percentages by target and teaching phase while keeping no-opportunity trials out of the denominator.
How to use this tool
Use this ABA discrete trial calculator to track trial-by-trial DTT data, prompt fading levels and independent response percentages across teaching targets.
- Enter the observable target definition and your declared prompt hierarchy.
- Record each trial opportunity with its target group, outcome (independent, prompted, incorrect, no-opportunity) and prompt level.
- Review the eligible trial denominator, independent percentage and prompt breakdown before exporting.
Fictional example and how to read the result
Fictional trial example: 8 independent responses, 2 gestural prompts and 2 errors out of 12 eligible trials gives 66.7% independent and 16.7% prompted.
The report summarizes eligible trials and prompt distributions. Unattempted or omitted trials are retained in the audit but excluded from mastery calculations.
Calculate trial-by-trial percentages and track prompt fading
Enter trial-by-trial observations for structured discrete trial teaching (DTT) or naturalistic instruction. Eligible trial denominator includes independent, prompted and incorrect trials. No-opportunity and not-observed trials remain visible but are excluded from the denominator.
Prompt levels allow clinical teams to observe whether assistance is successfully fading over successive trials. An independent response cannot have an active prompt level. Prompted trials require an explicit prompt level from your declared hierarchy.
Summaries pool trials within the same target group or teaching phase. Incompatible targets or phases stay in separate groups. This tool does not select teaching targets, declare mastery or replace clinical supervision by a qualified behaviour analyst.
- Define one observable target and your declared prompt hierarchy before scoring.
- Record each opportunity as independent, prompted, incorrect, no-opportunity or not-observed.
- Eligible denominator = independent + prompted + incorrect. No-opportunity trials are omitted from the calculation.
- Export results as CSV or PDF report with complete source trial audit.
What to enter in each field
- Observable target definition: Observable target definition and cue. Describe the stimulus and the expected response clearly before recording.
- Declared prompt hierarchy and scoring rule: Declared prompt hierarchy from least to most intrusive, such as gestural, verbal, model and physical.
- Chart target / phase label (optional): Optional target or teaching phase label to graph. Leave blank to display the first target group.
- Trial ID: Unique trial ID or number for this opportunity within the target group. Number trials consecutively.
- Target / teaching phase: Target behavior or teaching phase name. Keep different targets or phases in separate groups.
- Trial outcome: Trial outcome: independent, prompted, incorrect, no-opportunity or not-observed. Unattempted trials are omitted.
- Prompt level used: Assistance level provided: none, gestural, verbal, model, partial-physical or full-physical.
- Anonymous observation note: Optional anonymous observation note describing learner response, hesitation or setting context.
