Step-by-step task tracker

Author versioned task steps and see independent, assisted, unsuccessful, no-opportunity and missing observations separately.

How to use this tool

Use this task-analysis tracker to learn how individual steps and support levels are recorded across observations.

  • Define the steps and the scoring rule for a fictional task.
  • Enter one step observation per row with its observation ID, task version, step order and result or support status.
  • Review independence, support, interruptions and missing records separately before exporting.

Fictional example and how to read the result

A four-step task with two independent steps is different from a task where only two steps were observed. Keep unobserved steps explicit.

The summary retains step-level records. An interruption or missing observation does not establish inability to complete a step.

Preserve the underlying steps

Each row represents one step in one observation. Repeat the complete ordered step list for every observation; an omitted or blank result remains missing.

Independent percentage is independent ÷ (independent + assisted + unsuccessful) × 100. No opportunity, not observed and missing are excluded from that denominator and shown separately.

Insert, remove, reword or reorder steps under a new version. Versions are reported separately. Contradictory definitions or duplicate results suppress the version summary until corrected.

The linked UNC resource concerns a defined autism population. It supports careful step/support recording; it does not establish effectiveness for every therapy activity.

  • Write one observable action per step.
  • Define allowed supports before collecting results.
  • Record all five states honestly; absence of a record is not failure.
  • Print the detail matrix to review individual steps rather than only an aggregate percentage.
  • A report can expand to at most 10,000 step-by-observation cells. Split a sparse or long-running dataset into separate observation ranges before analysing it; source entries remain available for download.

What to enter in each field

  • Chosen task / activity: Name the agreed activity being broken into steps, such as preparing a bag. This label appears with the step report.
  • Shared context and supports: Describe the shared setting, materials and permitted supports. Use the same conditions within a step-list version.
  • Support and scoring definitions: Define independent, assisted and unsuccessful results before recording. Explain no-opportunity and not-observed so missing evidence is not scored as failure.
  • Observation ID: Use the same anonymous observation ID for every step recorded in one session. Repeat the complete step list for each observation.
  • Step-list version: Use a version such as v1. Any change to step wording, number or order needs a new version; percentages stay separate between versions.
  • Step order: Enter consecutive whole numbers starting at 1 for this version. The same numbered step must retain the same wording in every observation.
  • Observable step: Write one visible action, such as closing the bag. Use identical wording for the same version and step order.
  • Step result: Choose independent, assisted or unsuccessful for an observed opportunity; no-opportunity when the activity could not be attempted; not-observed when the observer did not see it. Blank remains missing, not unsuccessful.
  • Anonymous note: Optional: describe a support or interruption anonymously. Use this to explain why an opportunity or observation was unavailable.
