Is there funding for children with autism in Ontario?

Is there funding for children with autism in Ontario? Yes. The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) is the provincial program, and its core clinical funding is issued to families, not clinics. Families then buy services such as applied behaviour analysis, speech-language pathology and occupational therapy from registered providers they choose. The ministry sets eligibility, registration and amounts, so start with the official OAP page.

Information only, not funding or legal advice. OAP facts summarize the ministry pages cited in the OAP funding guide, with the core clinical guidelines checked 11 October 2026; the ministry can change them at any time.

How OAP core clinical funding works

The OAP funding guide cites the ministry source for each point below.

  • AccessOAP invites children in order of OAP registration, issues the funding allocation and checks the expenses families report.
  • An AccessOAP care coordinator guides the family through a determination of needs, which sets the allocation. It is separate from a clinician’s assessment.
  • The guidelines publish yearly allocations from $6,600 to $65,000 by age band and support level. These are family allocations, not clinic fee rates.
  • Services must be delivered or supervised by professionals registered with the relevant college. Physiotherapy is not an eligible core clinical service.
  • Families report expenses and keep original receipts and invoices. Cancellation fees are among the items listed as ineligible.
  • Childhood budgets are a closed legacy program for children registered before April 2021.

Other support to check

Federally, the Canada Revenue Agency’s Child Disability Benefit is a tax-free monthly payment for families caring for a child under 18 with a severe and prolonged impairment; it requires eligibility for the Canada child benefit and the disability tax credit. Families outside Ontario should check their own province’s program. TherapyCRM’s funding tracking is built around the Ontario Autism Program; it does not support other provinces’ autism funding programs.

What clinics record, and where TherapyCRM fits

A clinic serving OAP families usually tracks each child’s funding period, approved hours and dollars, and what has been used, so families are not surprised by a balance. TherapyCRM records funding periods with approved hours and dollars, warns when an authorization expires within 30 days or a balance falls to 20% or less, and for a family-paid funding period produces an OAP expense summary PDF the family can use when reporting expenses. It does not submit claims to AccessOAP or the ministry, decide eligibility or receive a live balance from a funder.
